Tribute to Charlie (aka Booker)
Posted on 09. Jun, 2010 by jeanine in Blog
I wanted to share with everyone the story of one very special little boy who crossed the Bridge last week and celebrate the wonderful life he was given by a very special woman.
Charlie (who I originally called Booker for some bizarre reason) came from one of our high kill shelters and was a little beat up andrough around the edges at the time. He wasn’t a particularly attractive guy (as you can see by his rescue pic) but he had a soulful nature about him that I really connected with.

Every once in a while I’ll have a really strong gut instinct about a perfect connection between a potential adopter and a dog and I’m compelled to make it my mission to convince the person THIS is the perfect fit for them, albeit they don’t always share in my clairvoyance. Karen was one of those people who was a little skeptical at first. I remember vividly the night she came to meet Booker at my house. She was exquisitely dressed and had a poise and stature that made it obvious she was a very successful business woman. Indeed she is a movie exec and traveled extensively so having a pooch that was portable was important. Booker was perfect sherpa size. He didn’t exactly put on the lance romance act so naturally Karen was far from sure this was her destiny dog. I on the other handhad neon flashing BINGO signs all around. After making my most convincing sales pitch (and without sounding like one of those psycho dog rescuers) she agreed to give him a try. He walked out that door with her and they both embarked on the best 5 years of their life. Below is Karen’s e-mail to me notifying me of our loss.

Dear Jeanine–
I’m sure you don’t remember me, but you changed my life forever on December 2nd, 2004. That was the day you allowed me to adopt my wonderful Charlie. When I met him at your house, he was called “Booker”. He was a 3 year old white Poodle-Bichon mix with a bite on his face and a reluctance to get too close to anyone. I wasn’t sure, but you knew he was a perfect fit for me and allowed me to take him home to try him on for size. It was during our drive home when he crawled onto my lap and layed his head on my chest that I knew he was my baby. We never looked back.
Charlie and I were 2 peas in a pod. He came with me to work, traveled with me to San Francisco, Chicago, Houston and New York. We were rarely apart.. He loved planes and his sherpa bag. We went to parks to look for squirrels and took long drives just so he could stick his head out the car window and let the wind catch his ears.
In February, he had a tumor removed from his kidney and was subsequently diagnosed with a very aggressive and deadly cancer of the blood vessels called hemangiosarcoma. They gave him 4 weeks to live, but with chemotherapy 4 months. I went for the chemo and Charlie sailed through with flying colors and no side effects. He remained energetic and full of mischief right to the end. He died in my arms on June 4th at 8:30 pm. He was only 8.
Jeanine, I want to thank you for giving me my Charlie. He was a wonderful companion and friend to me. Without you and Bichons and Buddies, I would have never known such unconditional love.
I know I will never find another Charlie, but I sure as hell want to give it another try, so keep your eyes open for a small, young dog who is in need of a loving mom and doesn’t mind hopping in a travel bag every once in a while.
And thank you again for giving me the best 5 years of my life.
All the best,
Karen

I can’t stop crying, this is a beautiful story and im so glad because of you Jeannie, Charlie & Karen found each other. What a beautiful boy he turned out to be. If only people knew its all about love and it can’t get any better than from your fur-kid. I have 3 of my own (2 rescues) and thank God every day for my blessings. You both are amazing women and I salute you & so do Buster, Elliott & me-Barney. Thanks you, Sincerely, Sandy
I am Karen’s sister. After seeing the first photos of Charlie and hearing Karen tell me about her new pet and how much she loved him, (I live in Michigan and Karen lives in LA) I fell in love with him, too, and knew I had to rescue a dog!!!! So Charlie was responsible for my rescuing Pumpkin, a poodle (and my first pet). I was so grateful for Pumpkin, I started volunteering for a no-kill rescue here in Michigan, almosthomeanimals.org. I design flyers and videos for them, created their website, and volunteer regularly at adoptions. Then I started fostering dogs – all of whom were adopted into loving homes.I have a foster now. I also tell everyone I meet about Charlie and Pumpkin and urge them to rescue – not buy or breed!!! So Charlie has been responsible for the adoption of at least six or seven dogs directly, and maybe more -and responsible for me taking a huge turn in my life – for the better. He was a wondeful, brilliant, adorable little guy, and he will be missed greatly by many people.
WOW…….what a story! We have two Bichon rescues at our house, and they mean the world to us like Charlie does to Karen. Their only fault is they don’t live long enough, and that’s why we consider them a gift from God and love them to pieces every single day. Charlie had the BEST life any little fellow could have asked for. May he rest in peace until his Mom meets him again over the Rainbow Bridge.
I am just balling!
Karen is my auntie making Charlie my cousin! Not only did Charlie live the BEST life with my auntie Karen but he was a true inspiration!
Because of the way my Auntie Karen wore her love for Charlie everywhere she went, her sister (my Auntie Eileen), decided to rescue her now beloved Pumpkin and additionally foster a poodle named Daisy (among others who she has since found loving homes for)!
There was an instant domino effect– I saw what a difference it made in the lives of my aunties, so I decided to take a chance on my rescue pitbull, Cowgirl. I just can’t imagine what my life was like before!
Dog rescuing became contagious in my family and the ripple is still moving forward– my sister, Robyn, and I spent the weekend together and perused petfinder.com more than a few times.
Thank you, Charlie, for being such a wonderful dog and for opening the eyes of so many to the gift of rescuing. We’ll never forget you!

Amazing Jeanine! How many lives have changed for the good because of you?
I’ve always said you have a heart of gold!
I am crying too! What an impact you have on so many lives, Jeanine. Bravo to you!!!
Karen is my dear, dear friend and was with me when I got my poodle, Oliver. She helped name him in the car and Oliver sat with Karen all the way home. Then I ‘adopted’ Archie from a pet store where he got way too big for the cage and no-one seemed to want him, since he was a very large standard poodle. Karen loved Archie and I think it was from when she met him, that she felt she would want to have one. . My Archie is still with me at 13 l/2 years old and acts like a puppy. He loves his ‘aunti Karen’, although he doesn’t get to see her very much. Charlie was the best thing to happen to Karen. She was such a wonderful, loving, parent as you can tell from the above comments. I don’t know who loved who more…Charlie or Karen. They were a great team and we will always keep Charlie right next to our hearts. I hope it’s very soon that Karen has a beautiful new ‘child’ in her life. I just don’t know who will benefit more.
